My Research & Development programmes have over the years attracted significant external funds. Amongst other I have twice received the "PHLS Small Scientific Initiatives Fund".
About 50 published original papers mainly on infection control issues.
About 50 posters and presentations at national and international conferences.
In recent years my research has focused on MRSA, that also was the topic for my MSc Dissertation.
My main success was the MRSA programmes at Peterborough Hospitals NHS Trust where we became the second best in the country.
I introduced a new concept for isolation – to isolate wounds instead of patients.
My programme for prudent use of broad spectrum antibiotics has – over the years - saved the Trust for about £1.3 mio. The antibiotic expenditures were in 2002 down to the same level as in 1996.
At Northwick Park my priority is to standardise microbiological surveillance of patients and environment. This is needed , as we want to use routine laboratory results for evidence based intervention.
Clean Hospital, MRSA and Clostridium difficile are the key issues, that is approached from a variety of angles, such as care bundles, innovation (UV light, iodofor detergent), teaching, campaigns, etc.
Medixair design commenced in 2001 and followed an extensive period of research into the air sterilisation market. From this work we discovered that all the products in the market were either inadequate in terms of efficacy and performance, very expensive or difficult and costly to install.
We concluded that we could design and bring to market a differentiated product that would be highly effective and portable. After two years of R&D and testing we now have a patented air sterilisation unit – Medixair - that is unique and which we believe will change the market.
