There are four main routes of transmission
  • Contact
  • Airborne Droplet and Airborne
  • Infected food or drink
  • Vectors

AIRBORNE DROPLET TRANSMISSION

Droplet transmission: by large droplets during coughing, sneezing, talking and during procedures which may generate droplets such as suctioning and bronchoscopy. The droplets may only be propelled a short distance through the air, but will settle on surfaces and will become airborne again from natural air currents. Examples being tuberculosis, influenza common colds and norovirus


AIRBORNE TRANSMISSION

Caused by dispersal of smaller micro- organisms, e.g. viruses, or airborne dust particles containing the infectious agent. These organisms can be widely dispersed by air currents before being inhaled or deposited on the susceptible host, or in the case of dust particles, onto horizontal surfaces, equipment etc.

Clinical studies have shown that everyday activities such as bed making ventilation systems open doors and curtains will create natural air currents that will re-aerosolise microorganisms placing them in a state where they can re-infect a susceptible host.

Examples being Streptococcus Staphylococcus Clostridium difficile Acinetobacter
